NOTARIZATION AND APOSTILLE
Nord Tolk helps to obtain notarial confirmation from Notary Public and Apostille stamp from the County Governor.
Notary
Notary Public is the name of the public official who carries out so-called notarial confirmations. Notarial confirmation involves giving a document or signature a public confirmation that it is genuine / valid. Notary Public in Oslo can be found at Byfogden (Tinghuset, 5th floor). In the rest of the country, the district courts carry out notarial confirmations.
Apostille
In order for a Norwegian document to be valid abroad, it must be legalized. Normally, it is the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that legalizes documents. However, there is a shortcut to legalization if the country to use the document has ratified the Hague Convention of October 5, 1961. In such cases, one can go to the County Governor and get an apostille stamp on the document, and this will apply as legalization. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has an updated list of which countries this applies to. Before you can get an apostille stamp on the document, it must first be notarized, that is, signed and stamped by Notary Public. Previously, translations performed by state-authorized translators became the apostille stamp directly without having to be stamped by Notary Publicus first.
This rule is changing. This may mean that translations made by a state-authorized translator must be notarized first, depending on which county you are in. The Apostille stamp does not confirm that the contents of the document are correct, but it does confirm that the signature of Notary Public / translator is genuine.
Documents to be used in countries that have not ratified the Hague Convention must be legalized by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs.
